The red garnet is one of the most common gems, found in metamorphic rocks on every continent.  Rarer forms come in greens, yellows and purples. Garnet is the birthstone for January.

There are many different types of garnet with similar physical properties and crystal forms, but they differ in chemical composition. The different types referred to as species include almandine, spessartine and grossular (varieties of which are hessonite and tsavorite) amongst others.
